Watu (Pty) Ltd – “Watu” meaning people in Swahili—was founded in 2017 with a mission to restore dignity, access, and empowerment through safe, affordable housing and practical financial education for youth.
Rooted in our guiding philosophy, “Watu Kwanza – People First”, we currently operate across Johannesburg, Gqeberha, and King William’s Town, offering support where it’s needed most.
Our work is built around two pillars: Student & Graduate Accommodation. We provide safe, dignified, and affordable housing for students and newly employed graduates – particularly those from low-income and disadvantaged backgrounds.
We equip young people with real-world financial skills and tools to build lasting independence, confidence, and generational wealth. More than just a housing provider, Watu is a growing community ecosystem—a movement dedicated to helping the next generation rise.
We currently manage 25 student beds and 4 graduate units, with a proven, sustainable model that includes financial innovation like our Watu Fund to support students during funding delays and derails. By offering furnished, flexible housing and peer support, we ensure that no young person has to choose between education and shelter.
South Africa faces a critical shortage of over 500,000 student beds, and too many young people are locked out of opportunity because of housing insecurity or lack of financial literacy.
